Poetics of War

In fact, how painful it is that the struggle of human beings against each other, or in other words, war, begins even before nations and races are born. As the first example, Cain killed Abel, eliminating the strong and the weak, in other words, the big "brother" and the younger "brother". In the previous sentence, the reason why the brothers were in quotation marks was to draw attention to the war and the facts of intimacy/kinship. Although there is an etymological explanation as siblings, that is, as a brother coming from the same wife, we know that some of the family members in the Korean peninsula, divided by the war, are still fighting for their lives in the North and some of them in South Korea, away from each other. On a certain day of the year, at a certain time, they are allowed to spend 11 hours under the supervision of North Korean agents. War has separated people on the same lands, but it has also brought people from other lands together. The Turkish brigade, consisting of three convoys, followed the Suez Canal, Mandep Strait, Ceylon Island, Colombo, Singapore, Philippines, Formoza Island sea route after a grueling journey that lasted 22 nights and 23 days, and entered the Pusan Port with one convoy every day between 18-20 October 1950.

“The dock was crowded. An American band was playing the United Nations anthem, schoolgirls carrying small Turkish flags in their hands were looking curiously at the Turks they had seen for the first time and perhaps had just heard. We were also curious to see the Koreans, to whom we came from far away for days to help, and on whose land we would die and die as soon as possible.” Turan Ergungor.

The people of the two countries brought together by the war in the memorial site and visitor center to be designed
It is planned to strengthen the bond between people and to transfer the peaceful culture that has been built to future generations. The success of the transmission of tradition through space and commemoration will undoubtedly contribute to the creation of cultural memory between the two countries.

As a matter of fact, there is no memorial-museum complex where Turkish troops, who had great successes in the Korean War, can convey their success. As a monument, there is the Turks who fought in Korea monument and park in Ankara, which was opened only in 1973. Compared to other countries in the world, Turkey's scarcity of monuments and parks draws attention. Australia and America have kept the memories of the Korean War alive by having 17 and 11 Korean War memorial structures and places, respectively. Interestingly, North Korea has only 1 monument, just like in Turkey.

What Yer Says – Lüleburgaz

Lüleburgaz is located at a special location where more than one main artery intersects. It is on the route connecting Turkey to the Balkans and Istanbul to Thrace. In general, the development over the years on the urbanization policies developed by the district has found its direction in the south. Because the large military and agricultural areas in the northern region also gave direction to the development of urbanism. The Korean War memorial and visitor center to be designed is 4.5 km away from the district center by car and is located in the northern part of the district exit. It has been observed that the Tosbağa Stream recreation area and green areas are also predominantly located in the southern part of the D-100 highway.

Situation plan

The project area is located transversely to the area of the triangular land with the least tree density. Car parks are located on the Istanbul - Kırklareli road, where the traffic flow will be the highest, and the vehicle traffic in the area is minimized. Putting the power lines underground on the same road and the project land border is a priority infrastructure work. The approach to the building can be provided in 3 stages, mainly through the memorial and ceremony area or via the ramp – sitting axis placed on the right and left sides. The ramps will be combined with the elevations of the ceremony area and will provide the easiest way for veterans to access the ceremony area.

The building is in the form of a square plan and is positioned 4.05 meters below the 62 level. Thus, it is aimed to reach a calmness like the cold winter days of the region in a more reassuring way. It is aimed to feel this spirituality the most in the garden at the back of the building. In addition, the back garden can be accessed from the outside by corridors of 2.5 meters width from both sides of the building. In the sections where the warehouse and mechanical rooms are located, two ramps are intended to bring the visitors to the natural ground level again. It is aimed for people to reach the panels made of wire ropes stretched between the trees with their individual explorations and explore the visitor area through experiences.

Space – Memory – Commemoration

How do the senses interact with certain physical objects that the phenomenon we call memory occurs and takes place in our minds?
depends on interaction. Looking at an impressive object, a special musical tone or a local flavor takes a place in our memory. It should not be forgotten that states have their own historical and cultural units, just as individuals have their own special memories. Societies want to keep their cultural memories alive. This is important for the transfer of culture to the younger generations and for the continuous reproduction of society. There are also spaces-areas to keep the cultural memory alive. Because some places or areas are places where the memory of the society is revived. Places such as the place where a defeat is taken in a war, the place where a victory is won, the place where an agreement is signed, mausoleums are places where social memory is lived. The existence of these spaces, on the one hand, creates the image of continuity in the society, and on the other hand, contributes to the continuation of the cultural memory. Because as long as cultural memory exists, social identity continues to live. The aim is to create a spatial memory in the mind of the individual who is the user of the museum-commemoration area with the inventory exhibited in the exhibition area. The permanent visual impression required the building to be in an allegorical imaginary form. For this, emotions and commodities such as trenches, trenches, military formation, order, happy ending, sadness are integrated into the design of the area.

Order - Discipline - Lineup

The wooden columns in the backyard are lined up to symbolize the military order. This area, which is in the last part of the project, is actually where everything starts on the battlefield. It is a mechanical movement by standing in line and acting collectively. These are 90-degree rapid movements with the turn left and right orders. The aim is to encourage the people visiting the museum to do the same movements while walking between the columns and to make them feel the military logic a little bit.

Trench – War – Conclusion

The trench or the hole made by a ball is at minus elevation. The course of the war can be observed, lines can be formed, and then war comes. Ultimately, every collision results and collective memories begin to form. These are photographs, diaries, newspaper clippings or medals. In this way, the building starts to rise from the -4.05 level, in other words, it is aimed to reach the minus level first.

Recall

The war is over, but there are also martyrs. Relatives visit their graves and commemorate past experiences. Therefore, the tombstones are arranged here in a symbolic order and discipline.

Commemoration - Ceremony

Although it is an event held on a certain day and time of the year, the commemoration activity
It has evolved into a serene place that can allow them to settle internal accounts with their emotions. The gradation has divided the approach to the commemorative ceremony area and the building into phases. At the same time, the level differences allow almost all of the people who visit the area to establish a visual connection with the building. At the same time, there are household functions such as waiting in front of the building and queuing so that there is no circulation problem when visiting the area with a large number of masses.

Confrontation

Access from the building at the minus level to the ground level is provided by two ramps located next to the building. Here, visitors are aimed to rethink themselves in the densely wooded areas of the forest, and to experience inner feelings such as reckoning or confrontation. The exhibition is spread over the area with the photographs that can be found on the wires stretched between the trees.Program Chart

The structure is gathered in 4 main criteria as program stages. These are, respectively, 1- the ramp that determines the approach to the ceremony and the building, the seating areas and the open ceremony area, 2- the ground floor of the building and the functional volumes at the -4.05 level, 3- the back garden and finally the 4- permanent exhibition hall. The person who passes through the ceremony area to the building and buys his ticket from the ticket office at the main entrance will find himself in the temporary exhibition and event area, which also provides direct circulation to other areas. This scheme can also be likened to the traditional Turkish house, the karnıyarık arrangement. The hall of honor can also function as a cocktail and resting place when there is no important visitor reception, and the cafe is positioned to be integrated with these areas. There are servants' rooms and toilets hidden behind the circulation areas, and direct access to the office and library is provided from the central area. Visitors arriving on the upper floor reach the permanent exhibition hall and the space, which is surrounded by commemorative materials of the Korean War. It is aimed to envelop the space with the serenity to be provided by the light semi-permeable polycarbonate façade. The permanent exhibition building at 0 level, with its seating areas and multimedia room, encourages visitors to be there.

The image of soldiers, called the backyard, consisting of concrete pillars placed in a regular manner in the pebbles, is the last stop of the visitors and a resting place for thinking. However, it should not be forgotten that the idea put forward in the first formation of the structure is in this garden, the regular alignment of the soldiers before the war. The orthogonal mechanical movements of the visitors between the pillars force us to go out of the ordinary in daily life. The ramps on the sides of the building and the technical volumes hidden under the topography do not stand out much. Ramps invite visitors to walk freely in the area by bringing them back to 0 ground level.

Military Museum Inventory

When the inventory given in general is classified, mainly photographs, plaques, medals, printed media and maps stand out. Photographs of these small objects are intended to be placed in 1 m x 1 m display units. Respectively, other objects were thought to be placed in the exhibition units located in the inner wall of the building. Inventory grouping is as follows. 1 gift, 123 photos, 2 videos, 9 maps, 31 newspapers and magazines, 20 plaques, 1 local dress, 2 flags, 9 medals.

In addition to the materials given above, there should be a section where the pictures or assignments of the children studying at the regional schools can be exhibited on the theme of Turkish-Korean relations, a screen and a souvenir book section where the photos taken by the visitors can be uploaded interactively and displayed in the digital environment.
has been considered.
